The Samsung M8800 Pixon is a camera phone that’s been designed from the ground up to be the best camera phone on the market. Not content with fitting it with a huge 8 megapixel, Samsung have also equipped the Pixon with GPS, 7.2Mbps HSDPA, DivX support, a fantastic screen, an upgraded version of their TouchWiz touchscreen user interface, and more camera wizzardry than you knew existed.

The Samsung Pixon’s competitors
With so many features in the Pixon, you’d expect it to be a bit bulky, but not a bit of it. The pixon is just 13.8mm thin, which compares favourably with the Nokia N96 (18mm) and the Sony Ericsson idou(18.5mm), both of which will be the Pixon’s main competitors.

The Pixon is a touchscreen phone with no stylus or keys except for the usual call connect/disconnect and a cursor button. The phone’s front is dominated by a huge 3.2″ screen that can display 262,000 colours (16 million would have been better, but hey, you can’t have everything!)

Samsung Pixon Camera
The camera is capable of taking impressively high quality movies – 30 fps D1 (720 x 480) video capture – with a 120 fps (QGVA) slow motion video capture option for at-home remakes of the 6 Million Dollar Man – plus Face Detection, Smile Shot, Face Link (face tagging) and Photo memo.

  • 8-megapixel camera with Auto focus
  • Digital zoom (X16)
  • Dual Power LED Flash
  • ASR (Advanced Shake Reduction)
  • WDR (Wide Dynamic Range)
  • Face Detection, Smile Shot, Face Link (face tagging)
  • Geo-tagging, Auto Panorama Shot, Photo memo
  • Photo Browser (Accelerometer Sensor, Tilt and flip
  • Sorting by Face/Time/Color/Folder)

The Dual Power LED Flash is the same type as that used by the N96. It’s not quite as powerful as a Xenon flash, but it doesn’t drain the battery as much either, and it’s quicker to recharge, meaning you can continue taking photos in low light after your initial snap.

Face detection, smile shot and Face Link are innovative features that help you take better pictures of people. Face detection automatically focuses on a person’s face; Smile Shot goes one better and focuses on their smile; and Face Link lets you tag a face with the person’s name, so you can search through your photos by their face and name.

Samsung Pixon Video camera
You can record full frame video with the Pixon at DVD quality (30fps at 720 x 480), or an incredible 120fps at QVGA picture size, which enables you to take slow motion pictures at speeds four times slower than real life.

The Pixon also supports a wide range of video formats, including MPEG4, WMV, DivX, and XviD, letting you watch videos no matter what format they’re encoded in (well, apart from those encoded in formats it doesn’t support!)

Unbelievably, the Pixon also comes with 5.1 Surround Sound! Not entirely sure how this works on something the size of a phone, but it certainly sounds impressive.

Samsung Pixon’s other features
There’s support for MPEG4, WMV, DivX and XviD video playback and a ‘Fast Shutter’, all of which makes the M8800 a real rival for a standalone camera apart from one detail – instead of a proper optical zoom, the camera only comes with a 16x digital zoom. And, as you know, digital zooms are rubbish compared to optical ones.

Ah right – we almost forgot – it’s a Quad Band GSM (850/900/1800/1900)/GPRS/EDGE phone too, with WCDMA 2100/HSDPA 7.2 Mbps connectivity with a built in FM Radio with RDS.

The front of the keypad-less unit is dominated by a 3.2″ 240 × 400 262K colour WQVGA TFT display, and inside lurks a music player supporting MP3, AAC, e-AAC+, e-AAC+, WMA audio formats.

For your audio pleasure, there’s SRS (Surround Sound System) Virtual 5.1CH, DNSe (Digital Natural Sound engine) with Bluetooth 2.0 and USB 2.0 for shuffling files on and off the phone.

Samsung’s new Pixon M8800 phone camera is scheduled for a France release around the middle of October with Europe and Asia following sometime after. as for pricing, we can only offer a Gaelic shrug.

The new Sony Ericsson W980 Walkman phone promises superior sound quality, and of course, a whole lot of spunk with its Walkman on Top feature, which lets you control your playlist even if the clamshell is closed.
China wholesale copy and clone Sonyericsson dropship from Chinaecarts.com
The Sony Ericsson W980 has 8GB of internal memory, 3.2 megapixel camera with 3.2 digital zoom, as well as an FM transmitter, allowing the streaming of music to any device with an FM receiver.

You can also access Sony Ericsson’s over-the-air download service, PlayNow, to download music to your mobile phone. The model comes with the Stereo Portable Handsfree HPM-77 headset.

Sony Ericsson W980 Walkman

Key Features:

Aiming to meet some high-end demand, Sony Ericsson W980 brings the cream of the music centered niceties of the house. The clamshell form factor and the quite eccentric features such as FM transmitter and light effects make it hard to point a finger at its main market rivals.

Sony Ericsson W980 360-degree spin

In clamshell terms, Sony Ericsson W980 has the rather compact dimensions of 92 x 46 x 16.9 mm. It also weighs exactly 100 grams, which doesn’t sound like tearing a hole in your pocket. Our 360-degree spin of the Sony Ericsson W980 pretty much says it all.

Sony Ericsson W980 Walkman

Design and construction
China wholesale copy and clone Sonyericsson dropship from Chinaecarts.com
In plain words, Sony Ericsson W980 is hot. The glossy front looks terrific and gives the phone a classy look when closed. Flipping it up ruins some of the pleasure, as the round buttons on the keypad are suspiciously reminiscent of the low-end Sony Ericsson R306. Imagine how that’s immensely flattering the other way around. Anyway, we are still pleased with the exterior of Sony Ericsson W980 and we are sure it will make the right impression in public.

We start inspecting the Sony Ericsson W980 flip in closed position. The front panel features the square secondary display of 262K colors and a resolution of 176 x 176 pixels. When it’s off, it blends perfectly with the opaque mirror surface, so much so that you cannot even guess its exact location.

One suspect that comes to mind is Samsung G400 Soul. Featuring the same flip-up bodywork, it trades the FM transmitter and the large storage space for a 5 megapixel camera. You figure if it’s a square deal or else. If the G400 Soul has some of those good Samsung audio quality genes, it’s in for a match with Sony Ericsson W980. With no information about the cost of either at this stage, the two devices might actually end up running in different lanes pricewise.

Anyway, we think the odds with W980 are towards a hefty price tag, which opens the door to some serious smartphone competition.

Now, one last thing before we get to the point. We should warn you that ours is a pre-release unit, so some minor changes are likely before D-day. Our units was rock solid and gave us no problems at all. So, significant changes to the overall user experience are quite unlikely.

  • 2.2″ 262K-color TFT LCD display of QVGA resolution
  • 3 megapixel camera
  • External 262K-color display with a resolution of 176 x 176 pixels
  • Walkman 3.0 music player
  • Shake control
  • Light effects
  • Touch-sensitive keys
  • Ambient light sensor
  • Bluetooth v2.0 with A2DP profile support
  • USB 2.0 connectivity
  • FM radio with RDS
  • Good battery life
  • Comfortable keypad

Main Disadvantages:

  • No auto focus nor flash for the camera
  • Inconvenient camera lens location
  • Shiny surface a fingerprint nightmare
  • Display kinda small for a high-end phone
  • Awkward context keys
  • Camera interface not user-friendly

The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic is a S60 5th Edition device with a resistive touch screen and tactile feedback. The device has a large 3,2“, bright nHD (640 x 360 pixels and 16:9 aspect ratio) color display. The device has variety of input methods: stylus, plectrum and finger touch support for text input and UI control (alphanumeric keypad, full and mini qwerty keyboard, handwriting recognition). Use the Nokia 5800 XpressMusic to connect to mobile broadband using WLAN or HSDPA (3.5G). Find directions and locations with the integrated A-GPS and included maps. Additional features include a 3.2 megapixel camera with dual LED flash, Bluetooth 2.0 +EDR, and USB 2.0 High-Speed. Supported WCDMA frequencies depend on the region where the device is available.

While it may not be Nokia’s first touchscreen phone (anyone out there remember the 7710?), the 5800 XpressMusic is certainly the first to come out of Finland with a mainstream appeal. What we’ve alternately known as the “Tube” throughout much of its development cycle is the first production device to run S60 5th Edition — the fourth major overhaul of Nokia’s ubiquitous smartphone platform since 2002 and the first to support fingers, styli, and high-res displays. Speaking of high-res displays, the 5800 comes equipped with an impressive 3.2-inch 640 x 360 resistive touchscreen to go along with its 3.2-megapixel autofocus cam, Carl Zeiss optics, dual LED flash, GPS, WiFi, 3.5mm jack, and a microSD slot with support for 16GB cards. It’ll be available in three versions — European HSDPA, North American HSDPA, and GSM only — and ships this quarter in black, red, and blue for €279 (about $392) unlocked with an 8GB card thrown in for good measure. Music fans with voracious appetites for new tunes might want to hold out, though, for the Comes With Music-equipped version that follows on “early next year” at a to-be-announced price.

Update: Nokia 5800 Navigation Edition
